Reese Carter is definitely not your average college girl. She’d prefer to spend Saturday nights playing Hero’s Crusade than attending a wild frat party on campus. When she bands together with Adam, fellow comic enthusiast and illustrator, it appears that Reese has formed a dream team sure to propel her writing into the comic hall of fame.

Adam Hayes has never met a girl like Reese. She’s sassy, smart, and loves talking comics, although he can’t see why she’d choose DC over Marvel. He’s thrilled to finally put his artistic chops to use in their upcoming comic project. But. this relationship is strictly professional. Or so he tells himself. When the two combine forces, they churn out magic in more ways than they had planned; they never expected to develop a steamy romantic sub-plot of their own…

His Work of Art is a new novella in the Hot & Nerdy trilogy by Shannyn Schroeder. Note that I said trilogy there? Well, after the fact of the first three books, this awesome author decided to write three more in this series. I’m completely grateful for this (I’ll explain why shortly!). That makes His Work of Art officially number four in the Hot & Nerdy series.

You may be wondering if you have to read the others before diving into this book, you don’t. The first three have nothing at all to do with this book, and so it can be read as a standalone. The story itself is told from alternating first person point of views between the main characters.

Ms. Schroeder has done something different with this book that I adore. It has a plot line that I’ve never seen anywhere else. Yes, it is nerdy, but it also focuses on comic books. Not just does it focus, but you can tell she does her research on the subject. So while you’re getting a really great interracial love story about two characters, you’re also completely understanding what is going on with what they are doing work wise. I read comics myself, but I have no clue and never did about what went into making them. That made that part of the book particularly eye opening.

Aside from being well researched, the plot itself was well written, and completely engrossing. I was on the edge of my seat and rooting for these characters the whole way. I thought it was awesome how they came together, how they overcame some things, and how they both had to make things work.

If you’re looking for a great novella that won’t take you a ton of time to read, but will give you a full love story, with an HEA and no cliffhanger, then pick this one up! If for no other reason then the fact that it’s different and entertaining. I personally gave it a 4 star rating… it’s not a book I’ll be forgetting soon.
