Ruin & Rule is one of those books I’ve been sitting here for two days going, “How do I even write a review for this.”. It is my very first book by Pepper Winters, but I can assure you, it will not be my last. The darker side of romance novels usually does not appeal to me but I can’t even jest when I say that I could not put this book down. I even walked around making dinner with my face shoved in my Kindle, more or less, because I refused to put it down. On top of that, I went through it so fast, and so engrossed in it, that I didn’t save any quotes for this review, nothing.

It’s almost difficult to write a full review on it because most of what I would tell you, would be spoilers. Some really large things jumped out to me though, that I thought was brilliant. The first thing that I noticed was that you don’t know the heroine’s name for about 65% of the book. She doesn’t just have amnesia, she has what I’m going to call double amnesia. If you can even imagine all the complications of that alone, on top of the actual story, then you might get a tiny inkling of how traumatic her life has been. I also loved how the author revealed things through the heroine’s amnesia, things she didn’t even know. As I said, it was brilliant.

Our hero on the other hand, he’s an anti-hero! At first I thought he was an absolute ass. Hot, but such a jerk. Then as you read further into it, the layers are pulled back. You discover what, and why, and you find extremely valid reasons for his actions. (Even if you think his reactions are beyond messed up.) His life is about vengeance, and revenge but oh so much more. I think I shrieked with joy when his blinders finally got ripped off.

My heart turned over for this pair of characters. By the end of the book, I was so attached to them that I didn’t want it to end. -Then- I figured out that, it’s not the end yet! Ms. Winters smacks you upside the head with a cliffhanger that, for me personally, had my jaw on the floor. I wanted the next book -right- then. Truth be told, I’m still trying to wrap my head around this book. It was a complete mind****, but yet I want to go hug the author.

It is relatively dark in it’s content, so if things of that nature bother you, I would not read this book…. Otherwise, I very strongly recommend it.

OMG. Now I’m going to have to read this book. But I hate cliff hangers so I’m going to have to wait until I can read them back to back. Great review, Amber.

Thanks Karissa! I really went into this one blind. And to be completely fair, I actually regretted requesting the ARC because then I was sitting here going, “I have to read it now.”. Even with the cliffy, I am SO glad that I did. I can understand wanting to wait though! The next one doesn’t even come out until 2016. >_< Yes, I looked.

      1. LOL. I’d be so frustrated with waiting a whole year. Nope. I’ll wait. Thanks for the warning.

Thanks you, Miss Coco! I can completely relate, I detest cliffhangers. Had I know this was one, I may not have read it. My reaction on GR at the end of the book was basically spot on to me sitting here going, “Nooooo!!”.
